On Friday 19th May, Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived in Saudi Arabia to attend the summit of the Arab League. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud, who will be hosting the meeting.
The two leaders have a full agenda of topics to discuss. Still, the main priority for Zelensky is to push for the return of all political prisoners of Crimea and temporarily occupied territories. He also hopes to bring back all prisoners illegally deported and present Ukraine’s formula for peace. And to ensure energy security next winter, Zelensky will also seek to involve as many states as possible.
Another priority for Zelensky is to focus on protecting the Muslim community in Ukraine. To support this cause, he brought along Mustafa Dzhemilev, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people. Being the first to suffer from Russian occupation, Muslims in Crimea face immense repression.
Zelensky hopes to progress on the issues he has brought to the table. His visit to Saudi Arabia marks an es step towards achieving peace and security in Ukraine.
